How To Estimate Mulch Volume For Spring Bed Refresh
3/1/2026
A simple process for measuring beds, converting depth to yards, and avoiding under-ordering mulch.
Why Accurate Yardage Matters
Ordering too little mulch creates uneven bed coverage and extra delivery delays. Ordering too much can leave material exposed to weather before use.
Measure Beds In Three Steps
- Break the area into rectangles.
- Measure each section in feet.
- Add sections together for total square footage.
Convert Depth To Cubic Yards
Use this formula:
(length x width x depth in feet) / 27 = cubic yards
If your depth is in inches, divide inches by 12 first.
Select The Right Product
- Use dyed mulch for long color hold.
- Use hemlock mulch for a natural premium finish.
For mixed properties, place bulk order first and schedule bagged touch-up material as pickup.
Final Check Before Checkout
- Confirm delivery access constraints.
- Confirm bed depth target (2 to 3 inches).
- Save your calculator output before adding to cart.
